walk walk walk

couple of items for any walkers out there. this coming weekend, there are two events i want to pimp. both of them are on Sunday, so you have to choose.

Astoria Bridge walk: in today's willy week, there was a highlight article on an opportunity to walk accross the 10k Astoria bridge over the mouth of the Columbia river. Wow, what an opportunity. if you have never had the chance to walk over a great bridge - i.e. Fremont, Golden Gate etc., do this one. The Astoria Bridge is amazing and long and the views will be just precious. Meet at the Red Lion In in Astoria - 400 Industry St. - 1 800 875 6807. For more info - 503 325 6311.

For the Love of Dove Run/Walk - in NW Portland, this Run/Walk of 2 miles will be another fun event to support our favorite animal hospital - Dove Lewis.

take care and please be thinking of our family thursday evening. we love you Two Dot.

and yes, it's hard for me to write the above sentence.

walked up to lombard yesterday morning for an important appointment and photoged this store under remodel. After stripping off the paint, there are signs that this used to be a Piggly Wiggly. I was surprised as i didn't think we had those in the NW ever.

More to come.

saw this on the side of the east bank saloon over in SE. i love stencil tags and this is especially cool. watched some foo-ball last night with a buddy. boy, hdtv on a nice big screen is so clear. i felt i was playing along with the boys. everyone is talking about "America's Team" the New Orleans Saints. well, they better play a little better if they want to keep that moniker. we were thinking... we know the new england patriots won the super bowl after 9/11 because it was planned by bushy and his friends. will the saints go that far? think about the feel good story of the year!

Off to eugene I think

This amtrak train joined us on our walk accross the steel bridge. It is not too often you get that close to heavy rail. I liked it. I have trained from seattle to portland and it is indeed a beautiful ride and relaxing.

update - could have been going to Spokane and on to Chicago also. that's a 44hr trip if you want to try it.

Convergence

Convergence
Originally uploaded by dieselboi.
Been walking a ton lately. I think i walked home every day for a whole 2 weeks. Egggcellent! On my walks, i pine for an ipod to entertain me, but then tell myself that the walks are healthy mentally because they allow me to process things from the day before i get home and whine.

i notice things too. Abandoned clothes. Grafitti. Interesting characters etc. Things you don't notice when in a car or bus. Lately, i have been seeing convergence more and more. When i say convergence, i mean the following:

you, walking down the sidewalk. Person A walking toward you. Off in the distance you see a bike coming. You all converge at the same spot and someone has to give.

I see this all the time while walking the waterfront or the esplanade. Most of the time, there is no drama, but yesterday, there were a couple of instances where i had to move out of someone's way because of convergence, so i began to say the word whenever i saw it. I was surprised to discover i was saying it rather often.

Convergence people!

someone was a little tipsy on thursday night on n. interstate. on our trip home from the 3 hour brian jonestown massacre extravaganza, we came upon 3 down trees on n. interstate. it was obvious someone had driven over them and took them out, but yesterday on my walk, i saw how.

it appears they took out tree 1, then missed completely tree 2. the car must have been small enough to fit down the sidewalk between the tree and the water bureau building (scraping it in the process) and then it careened back onto the road, taking out 2 more small trees.

how are they gonna explain that one to mom.

Someone's HOLY BIBLE

Someone's HOLY BIBLE
Originally uploaded by dieselboi.
I live in north portland. I jokingly refer to it as the "hood." on my walk the other day from a bbq, i eyed this "book." the holy bible people! Left for dead without a cover and worn on a street corner off n interstate.

i wonder what the story is about this specific book. Was it thrown out of a window by tweaker? Was it dropped by a child? was it left by someone who thinks that by going to church will redeem them, but the "book" doesn't really matter?

I'm not anti christian. I was raised lutheran and still instill many of the morals and values i learned in sunday school. I am confirmed and babtized and to be honest, if i had kids, would probably take them to church and send them to catholic school. My challenge is with the right wing exploitation of christianity for their beliefs, not mine.

Another challenge i have in NOPO is the state of some of the churches. There are many churches on NOPO, but some of them are in serious disrepair. We see them packed on sunday with parishoners, but during the week and on saturday, the buildings appear to atrophy. Simple things like mowing and weeding and cleaning out the gutters are ignored. After time this neglect begins to take its toll, not only on the building, but on the neighborhood too. If you love God and you love your church, why don't you do even the basic maintenence to keep it up?

just little old me ranting.

You are wondering what this is. I know it. Well, on labor day, we walked our little tushes off going to not 1, but 2 bar-b-ques in NE and N portland. this interesting pond is at our new friend Cari and housemate's house. We met Cari via tinymeat and went over to her little shindig early in the day. And yes, we walked. We met some great people and it was amazing to do that. I am rarely introduced to new people who i can actually relate with. Cari does handbags and is independant. That's cool. She's also a scooter gal. Way to go.

Bar-b-que number 2 was at our friends josh and jens place. we had to come back home to drop little phoebe off and regroup for the next walk. On the way up interstate, we stopped at our new favorite store- New Seasons- to pick up some wine and goodies. Our friends live about 2 or 3 miles up interstate, so our walk worked off the beer from earlier. The que was great. I was pretty full, but still munched on pickles and such. They have a great sense of style with danish modern and 50's retro. A great mix. We met even more new people who were cool and layed back and .............well cool.

The walk home was interesting. Monday night around 8:45 and walking the length of N Interstate. There were a few colorful characters, some suspected drug dealers, a yelling man, some kids causing mischief, and i think 4 or 5 cop cars- all going after something. One cop even slowed down to eyeball us. Bring it on! I was saying.

In the end? A great day. Something like 29,800 steps. That's about 10 miles or so walking.

i want to do more!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a katrina theme song yet?

a little overwhelmed

as i was shopping for some bar-b-que items on saturday and thinking - "boy, that's kinda expensive," i couldn't help but chide myself because everyone down in NOLA has nothing and i'm whining about a $9 bottle of wine.
boy, what a horrific tragedy. i'm a news junkie, so cnn, msnbc and foxnews has been on 24/7 in the house. also, i've been following bbc online to get a different perspective. hearing about roaming gangs, cops shooting innocent people, rapes, and murder, looting seems a minor issue. the talking heads are already pointing fingers and that's ok. it wasn't ok on tuesday when nothing was happening cocksucker Jerry Falwell!

is the response a reflection of race/class/prosperity in our nation? by far i think it is, but let me throw out a different perspective. when 9/11, or the first gulf war, or princess diana's death or the second gulf war occured, network news - ABC/NBC/CBS - all had continuing coverage on their perspective primary stations. i watch an embarrassing amount of tv and most of it is on network channels, but i didn't know the scope of the hurricane until i flicked over to live coverage on cnn on tuesday. where was the break in? where was the continuing coverage people? the only break-in i have seen all wee was when renquist died. what does that say about how much the powers that be care?

second perspective - friday morning, when we're getting photos finally of the trucks bringing supplies, i think Andre Agassi was winning his match at the US Open. also, college football teams were preparing for the opening weekend. nascar was gassing up. after 9/11, everything stopped - some because there were not planes flying, but otheres stopped out of respect for the destruction. where is the respect here?

lastly, i posted earlier about my friend john in NOLA. i heard from another friend that john and a few friends did ride out the storm, but decided to flee on early wednesday morning because the amount of gunfire was getting too close. roaming gangs were breaking into anything. they fled west to Houston and i haven't heard an update. at least they are safe. another couple we met in fla a year ago did evactuate on Sunday and are north of NOLA and actually had a baby on tuesday.

gonna walk my pizza off today.
