cameo restaurant

ever go to a place and just not feel right, but stick it out and in the end know your initial feelings were 100% correct. well, i'm not having a good day so far as a result of my breakfast experience. we decided to head out east off 82nd to a restaurant called Cameo on a friends recommendation. the first time we went, it was so packed, we couldn't get in the door. today, it was crowded, but we were able to be seated within a few minutes. that's when the frenetic stress began. first, it was the waitress thowing down the coffee cups and silverware and leaving the pot of coffee on our table while she cleaned another. then it was the constant running of the staff between tables. i just got stressed out from thier activity. when we ordered, i examined the menu pretty thoroughly - they offered a lot of choices for pancakes (which I do not like), so I went to the "other" section and chose the following: Rice, Vegitables and cheeze - served with eggs and bacon. Sounds healthy enough right? Well, when our food came, i got a pancake. yes, a pancake larger than the plate along with the two eggs and bacon and toast. this being more food than a family of 3 should ever have not withstanding, i got exactly the opposite of what i ordered and wanted. so, after tasting it and confirming it was not to my liking, i attempted for a few minutes to contact someone to ask about it. i had to resort to walking up and interrupting the staff to ask about this so called "pancake." "oh, it's a rice cake." well, if that had been the description on the menu, i wouldn't have ordered it now would I. well, not to be a spoil sport, i ate my eggs and a little bacon, but only made a small dent in the huge "rice cake." my counterpart also made barely a dent in her "pancake." we left dissapointed.

couple of points here - breakfast shouldn't be stressful, so why make it difficult. breakfast isn't rocket science, so why couldn't the menu spell out what i was ordering. lastly, why do restaurants feel they have to serve more food than one person should really eat in a day for just one meal. picture your largest platter for serving and that was how large these pancakes were - for 1 person. i feel that is irresponsible of the restauranteur for having soo much food go to waste every day.

enough ranting.

You've absolutely hit on one of my restaurant peeves--too-large servings. It's crazy making!

Yesterday we went to one of our favorite downtown eateries, Maya's, to find their portions were now substantially smaller. Almost human sized. We thought it was a wonderful change, though I'm sure many folks would disagree.

Sad to condemn a fabulous breakfast restaurant on the basis of that experience. Yes, the servings are huge; we always split the breakfast and come away quite happy. We usually don't even check the menu b/c the crab and shrimp omelette, with the best hash browns in Portland and terrific "strong toast", is so damned good we can't be tempted to stray. Regulars know that Saturday and Sunday mornings are always frantic at the Cameo - for a reason. What you ordered was called a "pindaetok" (I would hope the foreign name would be an indication that something was different about it...) and is a beloved favorite among many. No, it's not an IHOP pancake, sorry. Yes, the servings are huge; we always split the breakfast and come away quite happy. Give this place a try.
